The bright spot of the day is a young man named Alex who broke our hearts here in the NorthWest a few years ago by signing a $252Mil contract with Texas. McAfee Coliseum, the smallest stadium since the addition of the upper deck seat covers is sure to see plenty of post season play this October. I had the pleasure to take in the game Saturday, a Frank Thomas mask day against the Chicago White Sox. I was treated to a high energy battle and a come from behind win by the A's that made my trip to the Bay Area well worth it. And made up for the flight delays on the return trip. A Frank Thomas walk with the bases loaded in the 7th was the game winning run and led me to think. . . If a World Series was to be played here would the seat covers come off?

Beavers Win!

In what can be called a game of fundamentals, this is a game to play to your boys little league or girls softball team. The Oregon State Beavers who's only other National Championship was over 45 years ago in Cross Country, brings home the CWS trophy by winning game 3 over the North Carolina Tar Heels. How many of you coaching your kids have instilled in the little ones, Run Hard, don't hurry and make a good throw and finally, Keep in an Athletic position.

As for the win, Beaver's Ryan Gipson hit the ball and ran hard. NC second baseman Bryan Steed fielded the ball, saw Ryan running hard and hurried the throw, botched the throw to 1st baseman Tim Federowicz who had both feet on the bag. Not an "Athletic Position". Tim missed the throw which allowed Bill Rowe to score from 2nd.

Run Hard. . . Don't Rush and make your throw. . . Always be in an Athletic Position. . .

Just think if BALCO had the "Clear and the Cream" back in 1923. Bonds now sits at 713 and is sure to catch the Babe soon. Can you imagine a Golf foresome of Bonds, Ruth, Cobb and Pete Rose! As picks are made and yet another post-it note hits the wall, my desk looks like the Wall Street floor after the closing bell! Do I draft Bonds in the 4th round or do I not draft him at all? This is one of many questions that keep me awake at night and haunts me during the day. Does Roger have another year in him? will Randy be picked up in the first round? President of the Marlins , David Samson, speaks at a press conference in Portland, Monday. Samson was in Portland to meet with city and state officials and to tour the city as a potential new home for the Marlin's franchise.

Portland's Mayor Tom Potter was no Fan of Marlin Baseball in Portland and I expect, thought he'd play hardball and show them the door or road out of town and laughed when asked about it later. I wonder how much Paul Allen and the Portland Trailblazers gave to his reelection fund? Makes me wonder as the Oregon State House passed a Stadium finance package back in 2003 and Portland is the only City sitting with a package in place. PGE park, home of the Portland Beavers was remodeled a few years ago with Luxury suites and would be the best intern Ballpark in MLB history. And as Portland, said by some to be a one sport town. . . Might find that Basketball is not that sport and Major League Baseball could slip into town with a cure for that soured fan stomach. Jerry Reinsdorf arrived on the South Side with the World Series Trophy Thursday, I wonder if Jerry had the pilot fly over Wrigleyville if only to thumb his nose, on his way to Midway International. As the plane was touching down, I'm sure some place in Texas was freezing over. I wonder if the trophy will make a breif stop in front of the Ansonia Hotel in New York City where Claud Williams was first approched by Chick Gandil to throw the 1919 World Series.

As the 88 year drought comes to an end and "Shoeless" Joe can finally put all to rest and come out of the Corn Field, and ask "Is this Heaven?" and can be told. . . "No, It's the South Side".

I think not, but as the White Sox and Red Sox have shown, It can be done.

What can I say, I'm tired after 14 innings of World Series Play and 4 DVDs in the recorder. As the White Sox took a 7 to 5 lead in the top of the 14th Tuesday night. It's on the line now. . . The Astros must win 4 of the next 4 games if it goes that far. My feeling. . .Look out for Freddy Wednesday, What can I say. I have followed Freddy(The Chief) for years and he could give Houston their first World Series Win. The runs would come early, in the first three innings. Freddy will give that smirk after putting two on base, then giving up a Tater to the Astro Bullpen.

If, to Error is human, than to be human and behind the plate, is to error ? If Jermaine Dye had been at bat in the World Series in 1917, Who would have known except Jermaine and maybe Ausmus. But 88 years later, with Hi-Def Slomo and cameras from 50 different angles, including mound cams and plate cams. How can any human, MLB umpire or Little League Dad behind the plate, keep up with that.

That said. . . How is it, it's all going the White Sox way ? It looks as though a new century has wiped the slate clean. No longer has the memory of the Black Sox of 1919, Shoeless Joe and the $5000 that was dropped in his hotel room by Lefty Williams.

There is a new team on the field, and they don't know why it's going their way. But who is going to complain. After 88 years of heartache, the Sox are ready to Play to Win and [not] play not to Lose. . . Or to Lose as is was in 1919.

The only Rockets going off in Chicago Saturday were the ones lifting Fireworks high above the left field bleachers. At 43 years of age, Roger Clemens was ready to set the record as the Oldest Pitcher to win a World Series game. Trouble is, there is a reason that record stands. . . It is hard to overcome.. Just think about it, 43 years old. . . Some Managers are not 43 years old !

Roger Clemens is, and this will be talked about for years. . . The Best Pitcher of Major League Baseball. It's just that everyone will look at his [last] game and say, "Look at him, He's not that great. . . " Look, he's 43 years old, sure he might get injured(and He did). Sure he's on his last years. And I hope this is not his last game pitched.

Like I said, the Soxs needed this one. . . I only wish Roger put in 8 innings. Whatever the outcome, Roger Clemens will be headed to Cooperstown.

South Side fans getting it done. . .

When I bought my White Sox Tickets last April, I had no idea I was going to see the 2005 AL Champions. I saw the ad on Craigs List. . . 2 Sox tickets, I can't make the game, For Sale below face value! Since I was headed to Chicago on my way to Michigan and Cleveland, I bought them. 2 tickets for $26, they arrived in the mail a few weeks later, Season tickets from the owner, now in my hands for a casual Baseball vacation.

3 months later, when I arrived in Chicago, the Sox were a different team. A team of power pitching and clutch hitting. A team of pride in a city of past Champions waiting for another. I had an extra ticket when I arrived at the game and sold it at the gate for more than I paid. The game was sold out! People became rabid Sox fans, and even as the Sox lost 10 to 1, everyone knew the Sox were headed for the Post season.

Sox fans are some of the most vocal fans in the League, and a game in the South Side can give your vocabulary a few new words. . . But, let's put it this way. . . They earned it!

If the White Sox are a team of destiny, if they are the team to put Chicago on the "Baseball Championship map" (Of recent memory). Then the Sox must win game one. The White Sox must overcome Roger Clemens in Chicago. Take down, clearly one of the greatest pitchers in baseball, on their own turf. Roger has not had a good start in October this season, but he has pitched some terrific relief. Don't give him the pleasure of a win in game one, only to face him again in game 4, after Pettitte and Oswalt.

Advice for the Sox. . . Be aggressive early, bunt, steal, and Keep an eye on Freddy in game 4. If he gets that smirk, if he shakes his head. . . Get him out of there! My call? Sox in 6.

And so it will be. . . Many on the South Side were not even born the last time the White Sox played in the World Series. Now, Just hours after the ALCS things are looking pretty good. Good, healthy pitchers. A well rested bullpen, An offense with clutch hitting and a type of luck that reminds me of another "Sox" Team.

Do I feel lucky. . . Having seen the Sox twice this year (Buehle and Contreas) and watching Garcia back in the minors to Seattle and now to the World Series. All I can tell you is Watch out, The Sox are going to be tough to beat.

Just grab yourself a gravy soaked Italian Beef and an Ice cold Shiner and watch the Series.

Just back from LA, after the Dodgers-Marlins Wednesday afternoon, I got back to the OC ESPN Zone to see myself on SportCenter when Carlos Delgado hit a HR into the Left field Pavilion. I'm the guy in the Hawaiian shirt, 4th row to the right of the ball. The Marlins homered 3 times in the 6th, all into my section. The poor guy who caught Damion Easleys' tater did not want to throw it back after chants from the crowd and was showered with food and drink. . . I'll have some pictures up on Animaltrout.com soon. . . Look under pictures, Dodgers 2005 file. Animals' next trip is to Chicago-Detroit-Cleveland in July for the All-Star game. Fantasy Baseball will survive. . .

My gut feeling for Fantasy Baseball this spring is. . . There will be Fantasy Baseball on Yahoo!, but not the FB that we have enjoyed over the years. At least not the free one, sure Yahoo will offer a free game, but it will probably not have all the features we love.

If you played YFB in the 90's, you will remember it was all free, then in 2001 Yahoo! added Stat Tracker for only $4.95 for the rest of the season. And do you remember the good old days when you could click on any game an listen to the live broadcast for Free? That came to an end April 2001 when MLB signed a $20 million deal to let RealNetworks sell subscriptions to online baseball game broadcasts, they then told Radio Stations not to broadcasts on the net also.

MLB Advanced Media has offered license agreements to several small leagues at $10,000 for under 5,000 customers and $500,000 for leagues over 5,000. Last year YFB had a few Hundred Thousand players, sure some had two or three teams. But it's still alot, and I'm sure YFB and MLB will come to terms. ESPN, CBS sportsline and ROTO are also big players and if They could band together, could strike a deal that would make everyone happy.

MLB just doesn't understand how FB has grown it's fan base, or how it keeps growing through scandals, strikes and ticket prices. FB is the best thing that has happen to the majors and it has brought them new fans and alot of revenue. But that is not enough I guess. . .

Looks like big changes for Yahoo Fantasy Baseball this spring. . . MLB Advanced Media and the Major League Baseball Players Association last month announced that they have agreed to an "Exclusive" relationship in a $50 million five year agreement.

Friday, Yahoo!, ESPN, CBS Sportsline, and others were Emailed telling them they would not be granted a license to operate Fantasy Baseball games. What MLBAM would like of course is for all Fantasy Players to play on MLBonline.com. For a small fee I'm sure!

"We are pleased to unite with the players as we continue to enhance the reach of this great game through digital media" said Bob Bowman, CEO of MLBAM. Gee I wonder if we could reach Bob at Bobbowman@MLBAM.com and let he know what we think?

Dawn of a New Era . . .

As the Sun, Earth and Moon came into perfect alignment. So did the hopes and dreams of the Boston Red Sox and Sox Fans all over the world. And so it happened. . . On the evening of October 27, 2004. . . 86 years have been swept away in the first four games of the 2004 World Series.

Boston won 5 of the first 15 World Series and would have to wait over 3/4 of a century for another one. The road to the top would not be easy. Down 3 games to none, under the choke hold of the New York Yankees in the ALCS, the Sox battled back to the top in what I'm sure will go down as The Greatest Comeback in All of Sports, Period !

7 Straight Wins !

The Boston Red Sox are now closing in on History. Once left for dead just days ago, Boston now finds itself 1 win away from a World Championship. The St. Louis Cardinals had their chance to rough up Pedro early in the third inning, but Jeff Suppan got stuck between 3rd and home, turning an easy run into a double play.

Pedro Martinez who turned 33 yesterday, dominated from the mound, going 7 innings, with 3 hits and Pedro retired the last 14 batters he faced. What Boston has done well in this series is getting 6 to 7 innings out of their starting pitchers. This alone has relieved pressure off the bullpen and kept the arms fresh.

The last thing Beantown wants to do is host another World Series game. At least not in 2004 . . . While it is true that all streaks come to an end, one thing is certain, Someones 6 game record will skid, as both teams square off Tuesday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Boston bats will have to hit a little harder, and will have to be steadfast on defense to "Keep It in St. Louis".

Is the cup half empty? That is for the Red Sox to answer after they won game two of the World Series 6-2. Boston now leads the Series 2-0 over the St. Louis Cardinals. Boston is now on a 6 game post season winning streak, beating the Yankees the final four games of the ALCS. Curt Schilling took to the mound, bloody sock and all to improve his World Series record to 3-1 and 8-2 in post season work.

Boston has overcome 8 errors in the last 2 games to manufacture 2 wins. With their bats overcoming poor gloves, Casey Stengel once said "Good pitching will always stop good hitting, and vice versa". The Sox have not let mistakes get the best of them so far. . .

As for a sweep in the series? I wouldn't get out my broom just yet. The next three games are at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, and if the Sox learned anything from the Yankees, it is that no lead is a safe lead! Boston may have won their last 6 games in a row but the Cardinals are 6-0 at home in the post season. . .

Red Sox win game one. . .

Playing in the smallest Ballpark in MLB. It's no surprise, with the hitting power of both the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, tonight's game was the highest scoring game one in World Series history.

Boston drew first blood in the first as David Ortiz homered to deep right field, driving in Damon and Cabrera. Ortiz might just be the new Mr. October. As he made major contributions to the Red Sox success in the post season. Ortiz went 2-3 with a HR and 4 RBI's tonight.

Mark Bellhorn hit a 2 run, game winning homerun in the 8th. A hit off the right field foul pole fence that was deja vu Yankee stadium, 8th inning, game 7 ALCS. Bellhorn became the first second baseman to hit home runs in 3 consecutive games in the post season.

Cardinals starting pitcher, Woody Williams went 2.1 innings and was hammered by 8 hits, 7 runs and had only one strike out.

In the first game of what might just be a darn good World Series. The Follicle superior Boston Red Sox, looking like the House of David team of the early 1900's. Take game one of the world series 11-9.

And so the stage is set, as the Cardinals overtake the Astros 5-2 in game 7 of the NLCS. Houston, the Rocket has landed. . . and it doesn't look pretty! Roger was hammered by the bats of Albert Pujols and Scott Rolen. For the first time in the History of Baseball, a team has lost the final 4 games of a 7 game series. Now the Yankees have something to brag about.

Yes the Ghosts have left the building. . . Babe Ruth was asked once, How do you hit home runs? The Babe replied "I swing as hard as I can, and I try to swing right through the ball. . . I swing Big, with everything I've got. I hit Big or I miss Big, I like to live as Big as I can". Have the Red Sox started listening to the Babe instead of hearing the Ghosts of the past?

Boston defeated the Yankees Wednesday in a big way. Johnny Damon had a grand slam and the Sox beat the Yanks 10-3 in only 9 innings! Ghosts or not, the Red Sox are going to the World Series after an ALCS, that might just be the best 7 game series ever! Red Sox Nation will have to wait til Thursday or Friday morning to know who they will be playing on Saturday. St. Louis beat the Astros 6-4 in 12 innings, and will play again in a game 7 at Busch Stadium tonight.

FCRB News !

Just when you thought everything was going great, low interest rates, dropping unemployment, broadband internet, comes this news from the FCRB ( Fantasy Commisioners Research Board). We are running out of Commisioners at an alarmming rate. The FCRB concludes that by next year Fantasy sports will have a short fall of 20,000 Commishioners. By 2008 it increases to 60,000 and can only get worse if measures are not taken to curtail the problem.

HB11455 may ease the short fall somewhat, but maybe too late. House bill 11455 authorizes 300 million over the next decade for outsourcing the problem to India, Pakistan and China. Soon young children in these countries will be raised on Wheaties, Play Little League, Football, Hockey, Watch movies like The Sand Lot, The Bad News Bears, and Field of Dreams, Rudy, and yes The Mighty Ducks ! Some will become Fantasy Baseball commisioners, some Football, some Hockey, and some all three ! But it will take some time for them to get up and online. . . About 15 Years !

We need all the Commisioners we can get, now! We also need to keep the ones we have. Be nice to them and the next time you see one on the street corner, tell him how much you enjoy Fantasy sports, and of course put some change in his tin can !
